Goodweather Quoted in The Guardian
In response to the tragic ambush of National Guard members near the White House, Gary Goodweather — Democratic candidate for Mayor of Washington, D.C., former U.S. Army captain, and National Guard veteran — spoke directly to the community’s concerns about the ongoing military deployment in the city. Goodweather expressed that the presence of federal troops on D.C. streets was predictable and avoidable, stressing that the decision to militarize routine public safety efforts has only heightened risks for both service members and residents. He called the deployment a misguided strategy that invites violence rather than promotes safety, and reiterated his belief that the National Guard should never be used as a substitute for community-based public safety. Goodweather urged a reevaluation of policy, warning that expanding the troop presence could inflame tensions at a time when healing and solidarity are needed most.
