Goodweather: D.C. Taxpayers Deserve Better Than Stadium Subsidies
$1.1B deal extends taxes for decades while city services are cut
Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, the D.C. Council cast its second vote on the RFK Stadium redevelopment, and the deal still makes no sense. I would love to see the Commanders in the District, but this deal does not improve safety, education, or affordability for D.C. residents.
There is no innovative investment in technology, infrastructure, or local businesses to reduce the cost of energy, food, or housing — core issues that affect everyone in the city. There is also no investment in building enduring communities through educational services or facilities, from D.C.’s youngest residents to its oldest, to help foster a truly multigenerational city where everyone can thrive.
D.C. taxpayer money should be used to support the needs of its residents, both today and in the future.
While D.C. aims to be business-friendly, it is extending the Ballpark Tax — renamed the Sports Facilities Fee — which was originally set to expire next year, for another 28 years.
At the same time, capital projects are being cut throughout the city, yet $1.1 billion of D.C. residents' money is being spent to fund this stadium project, with no guaranteed residual income for taxpayers. It’s as if every D.C. resident is being asked to write a $1,400 check to fund the stadium, while giving away valuable public land to a team owner without even seeking meaningful community input.
As your next mayor, I will make sure D.C. invests in its people — in safe neighborhoods, great schools, and vibrant communities — so everyone has a chance to prosper.
Gary Goodweather for Mayor is a grassroots, Fair Elections campaign committed to building a safer, stronger, and more self-determined Washington, D.C.
